A day after the Daily Express revealed that the number of people injured in police collisions has risen by 60 per cent this year, Heather announced that she has joined the campaign to demand tougher guidelines for police cars involved in high-speed chases. Heather, who lost her leg in an accident involving a police motorcycle in 1993, said:
"All police cars should always have their directional sirens on especially when they are going over the speed limit. It is often the case that people have a problem telling which direction a siren is coming from and sometimes police cars do not turn their sirens on at all. I wonder if these are both factors in the increase in the number of people killed or injured in collisions with police cars over the past year. It seems that the police are changing slowly to directional sirens but obviously cost is an issue."
There were 2,105 injuries and deaths for the year up to March 2004 compared to 1,259 for the same period of the previous year.
