(Updated June 6) Live 8 was officially launched in London today by Sir Bob Geldof. Dubbed as the biggest musical event of the decade. On July 2, Sir Paul along with other artists including Mariah Carey, Elton John, Madonna, REM, Sting, Joss Stone, Robbie Williams, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder, groups Coldplay, REM and U2 and actor Will Smith will perform in free concerts in London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Philadelphia aimed at calling the attention of world leaders to the poverty in Africa. Sir Bob Geldof told the press:
"Here we are again to tilt the world a little bit on in its axis in favor of the poor. We don't want your money, we want you, because every few seconds a child dies needlessly of extreme poverty. Eight world leaders in one room in Scotland on July 8 can save millions and millions of lives, but they'll only do it if enough people tell them to....
"The only way I know how to make it happen is a gig. U2 were there at the start, of course, and Paul McCartney as he was in 1985. He's a guy who stands by what he believes."
Sir Paul and U2 will open the London leg of the concert with Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Sir Paul will also sing The Long and Winding Road, to encourage people to rally in Edinburgh, Scotland to participate in "The Long Walk to Justice" on the eve of the G8 summit at Gleneagles.
ABC hopes to secure the rights to televise the concerts.
