2005-Mar-03: Sir Paul Goes Commercial

(Updated March 4) According to Billboard, 20 of Sir Paul's solo tunes have been made available for licensing for use in commercials, television, and film. While a select few McCartney songs have been featured in film and television productions, Sir Paul has never before allowed his music to be used for advertising purposes. Three years ago, Sir Paul told the press that he would never allow his music to be heard in commercials, saying:

"We are not in the business of singing jingles. We do not peddle sneakers, pantyhose or anything else."

This month, however, a limited edition sampler was sent out to key agencies. Tunes in the sampler include Jet, Live and Let Die, No More Lonely Nights, and Silly Love Songs. There are some strings attached to this offer. In order for a McCartney tune to be heard in a commercial, the tie-in of the music to the product must make sense and the commercial must be part of a national or worldwide advertising campaign. Sir Paul's MPL senior vice president of promotion and new product development, Bill Porricelli, explains:

"Paul looked around and saw that the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Stones, a lot of his contemporaries are doing more film and commercial licensing and Paul said, 'Let's have some fun with it.' "

In a press release, Sir Paul stated:

"The magic of music is something which unites all kinds of people - young, old, artistic and corporate. In our company, we aim to bring this magic to the world while at the same time maintaining the integrity of the music."
