Sir Paul telephoned BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine Show today to say take issue with a statement made that claimed that raising one's children vegetarian is unethical. Yesterday in Washington, during a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Professor of International Nutrition, Lindsay Allen, of the University of California, Davis, stated that vegans and vegetarians who force their children to adopt their strict diets are inflicting unethical damage on their health. He claimed that children who are denied meat, milk and cheese early in life suffer mental and physical impairments that can cause permanent damage. An angry Sir Paul called the radio station to argue that he has been a vegetarian for 20 years and raised his children the same with no ill-effects:
"I really do think this is rubbish. I think the medical profession itself, apart from this one person, see - come to the conclusion that a veggie diet is good for you and can help with colon cancer and stuff so I suspect these things are engineered by livestock people who have seen sales fall off. From my own point of view it has been a good thing for me and my children who are no shorter than other children. There are plenty of alternatives on the market. My mum was a nurse and I know she would have said to me in the 60s 'you will not get your protein' but there are plenty of ways of getting your protein. So I think this is a rubbish statement and I do not agree with it."
