It was announced today that in 2006, Cirque du Soleil and Beatles' Apple Corps Ltd. have joined forces to stage a 90-minute Las Vegas theatrical production based on songs written by the Beatles. Sir Paul Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison have all approved the show which Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte describes the $100 million production as "about living the Beatles experience. The show has been a topic of discussion since the summer of 2000 when he met George Harrison at a Formula One Grand Prix party where Mr. Laliberte says, "We planted the embryo of a common dream":
"We want to bring the magic of Cirque du Soleil together with the spirit and passion behind the most beloved rock band of all time to create a single, simple statement of delight."
Although they will not be appearing in the show, Sir Paul and Ringo Starr will approve all the original Beatles recordings that will be selected for the show. Beatles' producer, George Martin, will oversee the musical element. According to Daniel Lamarre of Cirque du Soleil, the music will be "the original band and vocal tracks, not a medley, not a remix, not a hip-hop treatment - the real thing, but given a special rendering. That will be our surprise."
The production will result in a new Beatles album. Apple's Neil Aspinall announced , "There will be a record in conjunction with the show."
Sir Paul issued a statement saying:
"It is a fantastic project for us and I personally am excited to collaborate with such a great creative team."
Ringo added:
"How excited can I get? the Beatles, Cirque du soleil, an incredible venue in Las Vegas -- what could be better?I'm looking forward to the first show 'cause I'm going to be there!"
There's no hurry to get there, however. The show is expected to run for 20 to 30 years in a 2,000-seat theater-in-the-round at the Las Vegas Mirage Hotel.
