Variety reports today that Apple Computers and The Beatles are close to settling their legal dispute. The magazine claims that the settlement would "dwarf the US$26.5 million" paid to the Beatles in 1991 to settle a trademark dispute. This time, there is speculation that Sir Paul may even become a member of Apple Computers board of trustees which would be a huge coup for Apple Computers.
The Beatles sued Apple in 2003 for breach of contract after Apple entered the online music download business with the iTunes Music Store (iTMS). Apple Corps claims that Apple Computer is in breach of an agreement that forbids it from using the trademark for any application "whose principal content is music". One lawyer told Variety:
"People are expecting this to be the biggest settlement anywhere in legal history, outside of a class action suit. The numbers could be mind boggling."
