Britain's Queen Elizabeth II has invited Sir Paul's wife, Heather Mills, to the first women-only event to be held at Buckingham Palace, a luncheon organized to celebrate 'the excellence of women'. On March 11, Heather has been invited to join 200 female leaders from the arts, science, sport, business and charity including Cherie Blair, Jemima Khan, Twiggy, and Harry Potter author J. K. Rowling, Princess Diana's friend Rosa Monckton, who is head of the Diana Memorial Committee, former athlete Dame Mary Peters, Jimmy Choo shoes boss Tamara Mellon, Baroness Hogg, onetime head of John Major's policy unit, opera singer Lesley Garrett, Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, women's refuge pioneer Erin Pizzey, artist Sam Taylor Wood, Channel 4 newsreader Sheena McDonald and the founder of the Mobo Awards, Kanya King. According to a Buckingham Palace spokesperson:
"The Queen wanted to celebrate the excellence of women. Lunch is more convenient for women because they may have to pick up children in the afternoon. She has been a working mother most of her adult life and thought this would be an appropriate way to celebrate women and recognize their achievements and contribution. It will be a day to pay tribute to women across a broad range who have achieved in all sorts of areas, many who have triumphed, often in the face of adversity. It's a good opportunity for these women to get together and talk to each other about their stories, some of which are very inspiring.
"It will be the first all female event at the Palace. It's one of the theme days that we're having. It's going to be about women and their achievements. It's not just well known people, there will be lots of business women, women from arts and education and grass roots people."
The Queen will be joined by other members of the royal family: the Princess Royal, the Duchess of Gloucester and the Countess of Wessex, who will be attending her first social engagement since giving birth to her daughter Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor. The Queen's husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, will not have to contend with a house full of women on that day. He'll be off with his friends at a Royal Navy reunion St. James's Palace.
