Anya Noakes, a spokeswoman for Heather Mills McCartney, announced today that Sir Paul's wife must soon undergo major pelvic surgery. When Heather was struck by a police vehicle back in August, 1993, not only was her leg severed, but she also suffered a shattered pelvis. Metal plates were used to mend the pelvis, but now, nearly two months following the birth of baby Beatrice, Ms. Noakes told reporters:
"The weight of the baby has caused the plates to come apart. She is feeling very uncomfortable. The weight of carrying the baby has put strain on these plates and Heather now needs surgery. The plates were put in after her accident - it is impossible to underestimate the seriousness of the injuries she suffered in that crash. This will be a big operation but Heather is keen to get it out of the way as soon as possible because she doesn't want to take too much time off work.'
Currently on maternity leave, Heather expects to undergo the operation in the next few weeks.
The problem with the steel plates was detected when Heather was x-rayed after falling from her horse while riding with Sir Paul on their Sussex estate last month. Ms. Noakes stated:
“X-rays showed the damage. There are various complications which have nothing to do with falling off a horse. It is all to do with the original injuries she got in the accident all those years ago.”
One orthopedic surgeon told reporters that Heather’s surgery could last up to four hours adding, “To replace metal plates in the pelvis is a much bigger deal than originally putting them in.”
